Over the next 100 days, I will present one movie of significances in horror, suspense or thrillers for each year from 1919 to 2018. The next film presented here is the 1997 science fiction horror movie "Event Horizon" starring Sam Neill, Laurence Fishburne, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson and directed by Paul WS Anderson.
Event Horizon (1997)
Dir- Paul WS Anderson
The discovery of the lost starship Event Horizon brings a rescue team out to the orbit of Neptune to find out what happened. The ship's designer Dr. Weir accompanies the team, and after a short stint in hibernation, the crew of the Lewis and Clark awaken to find the gothic looking Event Horizon pretty much intact. Once onboard the ship's crew begins to suspect that something evil may be present while Dr. Weir is seemingly intent on showing everyone the secrets that ship brought back from its trip. Director Paul WS Anderson wanted to direct a science fiction horror movie but did not want to copy the plot of Alien. Instead, he focused on making a haunted house movie in space with the ship itself possibly being possessed. The look of the vessel is truly breathtaking with its gothic influence and grand scale. The cast is excellent in their roles, and the film has a decent amount of gory sequences to excite fans of splatter movies. The film was not well received by critics but is popular with fans of sci-fi and horror films as the movie has achieved cult status since its release.
