I will be posting Christmas-themed horror films over the next 24 days of LosMas; for the twenty-third night, I am posting the 2010 thriller The Traveler.
The Traveler (2010)
The holiday season is usually one of the worst times for
first responders, as they are often required to work while missing family time for their duties. The Traveler is a 2010 psychological thriller directed by Michael Oblowitz and featuring
Val Kilmer in a truly terrifying role as
Mr Nobody. It's
Christmas Eve in a small New York police station, and while the staff anticipate a quiet night, they are surprised by the arrival of a mysterious man with no name who claims he has committed a crime. While the police struggle to identify him, they soon learn that his intentions are not what they expected, and dark secrets will be revealed. The Traveler has a great premise, and Val Kilmer really does own the role in this movie. Much like
Rutger Hauer in
The Hitcher, Mr Kilmer is a stranger who is far more dangerous than anticipated, and the destruction he leaves will prove quite a challenge to Detective Alex Black, portrayed by
Dylan Neal. The isolated setting, lack of backup, and seemingly supernatural skills of Mr Nobody certainly make this film a thrilling ride, and the secrets revealed will test the detective's nerve as he is compelled to stop him. The Traveler is a hidden gem of a movie, and with the recent passing of Mr Kilmer, it is a great movie to check out and appreciate this underrated performance.
