It Came Upon a Midnight Clear (2024)

Holiday slashers don't often take place in high school, but with so many great teen slashers, it's the perfect setting for some jolly good stab and slice. Jeremy and Minka are neighbors and besties who grew up together but remain friends only. Jeremy is excited about hooking up with the popular girl Amanda, and while Minka does not share his enthusiasm, she supports him. Jeremy has a dark secret about his past, and the community he and his mother relocated to will soon find out when a series of murders begin to hit local students. It Came Upon a Midnight Clear is an indie holiday slasher comedy directed and written by Stephen Allen Gutierrez and introducing Drew Pipkin, Jaeden Riley Juarez, and Katerina Rakosky. It Came Upon a Midnight Clear has the look and feel of an indie movie, and while its production values look basic, the casting and story are superb. Drew and Jaeden have excellent chemistry together, and they make for a great couple who grow closer as bodies pile up and accusations point to them. The movie plays into the Scream meta style with references to horror movies, nods to Wes Craven, and respect for the genre, while not forgetting to include some great practical gore. Fans of horror will appreciate seeing Michael Berryman as the school principal. While the film isn't perfect due to the indie budget, Director Gutierrez gets it right with the casting and a creepy-looking killer. Filmed entirely in San Antonio, fans of Texas horror will appreciate a holiday horror movie without the snow but with some great kills and a fun cast.
