For the month of October I will put out a list of Top 10’s on a number of subjects each day, this should be fun as I would enjoy feedback and discussion on my list and will welcome feedback on how to improve the list as I plan on featuring them on my website.

Top 10 Horror/Thrillers Set in Space

Alien (1979) Ridley Scott

Horror and Sc-Fi classic that birthed the Alien Series and a number sequels and prequels. After almost 40 years this films is just as terrifying and intense as it was since it was released in 1979.

Event Horizon (1997) Paul WS Anderson

Set onboard an eerie gothic inspired spaceship, Event Horizon has emerged as a popular film among horror movie fans for its intense gore and top notch special effects. This is a film begging for a prequel to help answer many of the question left unanswered.

Alien: Covenant (2017) Ridley Scott

The crew of the colony ship Covenant set out to establish a colony only to face a tragedy that results in their discovering a previously unknown world. What looks like a paradise turns into a nightmare as the crew not only discovers the survivor of the Prometheus but the deadly cargo it carried.

Prometheus (2012) Ridley Scott

Years before the Nostromo discovered a derelict alien spaceship, the research vessel Prometheus lands on a planet with an expedition intent on discovering clues about an unknown civilization. What they unleash turns into disaster as they discover that some secrets to the universe are best left unanswered.

Europa Report (2013) Sebastian Cordero

This found footage movie details the events of a doomed mission to one of Jupiter’s moons. Despite losing contact with Earth and a number of incidents the crew continues the mission only to find that something mysterious may be under the ice. Europa Report was released on video on demand to good reviews, the claustrophobic feel of a spaceship adds greatly the tension as the crew faces an unknown threat with no help from Earth. A great slow-burn thriller that has gained an audience in recent years.

Planet of the Vampires (1965) Mario Bava

Mario Bava directed this film that has the crew of a spaceship attempting to rescue its sister ship only to find the remains of an alien vessel. They soon encounter a threat that pits crew members against one another as they work to stop the threat from destroying their ship and crew. This early Sci-Fi thriller inspired Alien and makes effective use of creepy sets and cool costumes.

It! The Terror From Beyond Space (1958) Edward Cahn

An expedition returning from a manned mission to Mars encounter a stowaway that proves to be a threat the mission and the crew of the sip. This Sc-Fi Thriller inspired many later films including Alien.

Pitch Black (2000) David Twohy

When it was released not much was known about this film and it looked like a throwaway until people watched and embraced the anti-hero known as Riddick. Pitch Black is a great film about survival and in many ways, it is like a shark movie but out of the water. The creatures are scary and viscous but its Riddick who stands out with his ice-cold demeanor and survivalist mindset. Followed by two sequels that aren’t too bad and make for a trio of exciting thrillers.

Pandorum (2009) Christian Alvart

An amnesia affected crewman wakes up on a generation ship and has to discover what is going on as he encounters other crewmembers as well as an army of crazed maniacs that pose a threat to their safety. The movie was savaged by critics but has a cult following.

Apollo 18 (2011) Gonzalo Lopez Gallego

This found footage movie purports to be a secret mission that took place in late 1974 that never returned. What is revealed is a series of clues that indicate the Russians landed on the moon only to face an unknown danger that also threatens the present mission. The movie was not well received but is surprisingly well made using realistic looking sets and spacesuits.
