96 Days to Halloween- 1923 The Hunchback of Notre Dame

96 Days to Halloween

Over the next 100 days, I will present one movie of significances in horror, suspense or thrillers for each year from 1919 to 2018. The fifth film presented here is the 1923 American silent romantic drama classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame directed by Wallace Worsley and based on the classic novel written by Victor Hugo

The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Dir- Wallace Worsley

This adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel is notable for the casting of Lon Chaney and his extensive use of makeup to transform him into the crippled Quasimodo. The story centers on Quasimodo being sent to kidnap a beautiful gypsy girl named Esmeralda who is desired by the evil brother of the archdeacon. Esmeralda takes sympathy on the crippled man as she is thrust into a plot that involves a peasant revolt and attempted murder of an officer who has also taken a liking to Esmeralda.
