Scary Real Life Places in Horror Movies- 87 Days to Halloween


Aokigahara Forest, Japan
This Japanese forest known as the Sea of Trees is located northwest of Mt Fuji. The forest has developed a dubious reputation in recent years for the large numbers of suicides that have occurred, earning it the nickname the Suicide Forest. The 2016 film The Forest is set in the Aokigahara Forest and involves a woman looking for her twin sister.



Amityville House
In recent decades, one of the most infamous movie homes, this large Dutch Colonial house, is located on the south shore of Long Island, New York, in the town of Amityville. The first two Amityville Horror movies focus on the murder of the DeFeo family, and the 28 days the Lutz family lived there when they left the house, claiming it was haunted. 



Area 51
A classified military installation maintained by the US Air Force near Groom Lake, Nevada, has been the source of conspiracy theories for decades, mostly involving top-secret aircraft and rumors of UFO/Extraterrestrial activity. 2019 found footage movies Area 51 takes place at the secret base.



Centralia, Pennsylvania
A ghost town in eastern Pennsylvania, the town of Centralia, was a coal mining community that began to decline as the result of an underground coal fire in 1962. The subterranean fires have burned continuously since and have made the town unlivable due do toxic gases that leak to the surface. The eerie smoke fogs inspired books, movies, and video games, including the 2006 film Silent Hill. 



Chernobyl, Ukraine
On April 26, 1986, a nuclear accident occurred in the Number 4 reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near Pripyat, Ukraine. The disaster and coverup was a massive problem for the Soviet Union as they worked to contain the worst nuclear disaster to date. The facility has been abandoned for 34 years and was used as the setting for the 2012 found footage movie Chernobyl Diaries. 



Death Valley, California
Death Valley is located in Eastern California in the Northern Mojave Desert alongside the Great Basin Desert. It is the lowest point of elevation in the United States, it has recorded some of the hottest temperatures on record. This hot and desolate area has been used for several television shows and films, including the 1982 horror film Death Valley.



Dyletlov Pass, Russia
On Feb 1-2, 1959, nine students from the Ural Polytechnical Institute went on a hiking/ski trip near the Kholat Syakhl slopes in the Northern Ural Mountains. The group was reported missing and found weeks later with all members dead from hyperthermia or physical trauma due to unknown circumstances. The mystery of this event was used in the 2013 Renny Harlin movie Devils Pass.



Hanging Rock, Australia
Also known as Dryden's Rock, this geological formation in Central Victoria, Australia, has an elevation of over 2,300 feet. It was the setting for the 1967 book Picnic at Hanging Rock and the film adaptation by the same name released in 1975. The book and the movie have generated plenty of speculation due to the mysterious nature of the event.



Hoia Baciu Forest, Romania
Situated near the city of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, the Hoia Baciu forest has become popular with paranormal researchers for stories related to ghosts and urban legends. Despite the lack of credible evidence, the forest has been featured in Ghost Adventures, Destination Truth, and the 2016 film The Devil Complex. 



Paris Catacombs
The Catacombs are a series of underground ossuaries that hold the remains of roughly six million people under the city of Paris, France. The Catacombs were constructed in the 18th century; the underground tunnels helped overcome the crowded cemeteries around Paris. In recent years, the Catacombs have become popular with concerts, private events, and urban explorers who wish to explore many tunnels. The 2014 move As Above, So Below is set in the Catacombs and is a popular found footage movie.  



Saltair Pavilion
The Saltair Pavilion is located at the Saltair Resort on the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The 1962 Herk Harvey movie The Carnival of Souls makes use of one of the pavilions. The film is noted for its surreal and ghostly imagery that made the abandoned pavilion into one of the most memorable haunted movie locations. 



The Pine Barrons
The Pine Barrons is a vast pine forest located in New Jersey. The Jersey Devil is a legendary creature that has been discussed since 1735 and is the subject of the 1998 movie The Last Broadcast. This film was one of the first movies filmed using digital equipment and used the found footage style that would become popular a year later with The Blair With Project.
