Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)

Inspired by real events, this French-language period thriller presents a series of brutal attacks on villagers by an unknown creature and the investigation that sought to end this tragedy. The Beast of Gevaudan was a terrifying creature that, in 1764, brutally killed more than 60 people. King Louis XV dispatches a knight and naturalist named Fronsac who using his intellect, and the martial arts prowess of his Iroquois partner seek to find a rational answer to this series of horrific events. His investigation concludes that the accounts of wolf attacks do not fit the pattern of the victim's wounds, so he seeks out something unknown but purely of natural origin. What is revealed of the animal attacks may be part of a more massive conspiracy that could threaten the Crown?

Brotherhood of the Wolf was directed by Christophe Gans and stars Samuel Le Bihan, Mark Dacascos, Monica Belucci, and Vincent Cassel. The film mixes some curious genres as it appears to be a werewolf movie but includes French Aristocracy, occult practices, martial arts, and elements of political collusion. The film earned praise for its unique performances, high production value, and excellent period setting.

Halloween (1978)

Halloween (1978)
Dir- John Carpenter

What most slasher flicks lack are the classic elements of horror; suspense, terror, and the sheer emotion of fright. Considering this, John Carpenter presents what may be one the best slasher movies ever made. The movie starts with a flashback; a boy finds a mask and walks over to his sister's room, and commits a brutal murder. We soon see him unmasked, and the shock that such a young boy committed this heinous deed sets the tone for the movie. After many years he escapes the asylum and returns home to commit even more murders. We then meet up with Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), who is forced to babysit on a night when she would rather be out with her friends. Little do they realize that this will be their last Halloween? The Shape (That is his nickname) is stalked by his psychiatrist Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasance), a man who tried to help him and now wishes to put him away once and for all. What makes Halloween so great and original is that the movie makes excellent use of the Bogeyman theme, which we all find scary. We also have a great musical score and excellent use of widescreen in what is a true low-budget movie. Making over 80 million when it was released, and with it came the sudden rush of even cheaper imitations.

Horror Movie Cliches: Summer Camp

Avoid any camp not named for an Indian like Crystal Lake or Sleepaway.

If you are a counselor, avoid picking on shy kids, they do get revenge.

If you are a camper, befriend the shy loner types, they need the companionship.

Overly friendly counselors may be recent asylum escapees.

Make sure they put away all knives, arrows and other potential weapons.

If you have sex in the woods, you will die in the woods!

Campfire Legends always summon the worst of events.

If you encounter any figure wearing a hockey mask, you're a goner!

Don't go scurrying in the counselor's cabin; you may discover a secret hobby.

If you happen to survive the carnage in the first film, don't appear in a sequel, you will be offed in the first few minutes.
