Jaws: The Revenge

Jaws: The Revenge (1987)

Oh man, what about sequels? When they reach number 4, it usually means the script was penned by someone who lost a bet or dared to write the worst thing imaginable. Bruce is back, only this time it is after the last Brody son has been digested and along with dad dead as a doornail. Ellen Brody has taken a trip to Jamaica to get past her tragedy and is surprised to discover that the shark is back, and this time it's personal. What I remember best about the preview was that the audience laughed after that tag line, and I knew then that it would only be an omen of things to come.

Raging Sharks

Nano Shark (2024)

Nano Shark (2024)
Scientists are summoned to help treat a politician's son, and they decide to use shrink technology to inject a shark into the body to attack the illness. However, when the syringe-carrying shark and a support team in a mini-sub accidentally inject a janitor, the consequences are dire. Nano Shark is a 2024 movie directed by Brett Kelly and features an unknown cast. Nano Shark is a low-budget comic take on Fantastic Voyage and Innerspace. Unlike those blockbusters, Nano Shark lacks the groundbreaking special effects and instead relies on low-tech camera tricks that are silly and cheap-looking. Nano Shark is a great idea, and playing it off as a spoof would be fine if the script and acting were better; even the cheap effects would be fine if appropriately utilized. Nano Shark has a great-looking poster, but, like many budget movies, it offers nothing more. Director Kelly has made several low-budget movies that populate streaming clients, and this one is yet another flashy poster with no substance.

Psycho Shark (2009)

Psycho Shark (2009)
Two college students take a trip to the beach to enjoy a weekend away from their classes, only to find themselves stranded at an isolated hotel. They are given video cameras to film their time, but one of the girls finds clues that they may be in danger. Psycho Shark is a 2009 Japanese horror movie directed by John Hijiri. Despite the title, Psycho Shark features almost no shark scenes and instead has a confusing plot that focuses more on showcasing bikini-clad ladies and a shark-worshipping cult than on shark attacks. The plot borrows heavily from The Ring but lacks the tension and coherent storyline to make this movie enjoyable. Psycho Shark looks more like a voyeur film than a serious horror movie. The film was initially titled Jaws in Japan, but the blatant attempt to ride on the success of the most popular shark movie likely forced the film's name change. Psycho Shark has nothing to offer viewers besides an hour and ten minutes of subtitles, stereotypical Japanese ladies, and too many creepy shots of their bikini-clad bodies.

Apex Predators 2: The Spawning

Apex Predators 2: The Spawning
A volleyball tournament on the beach is facing problems as a series of shark attacks has caused panic. This time around, staying out of the water isn't an option as mutated flying sharks begin to lay waste and rack up victims. A sequel to the 2021 low-budget shark movie, Apex Predators 2 follows a similar style, with a cast of characters in various locations discussing the shark menace as it unfolds. The cast includes Vernon Wells as a bartender and features Brinke Stevens returning in the same role as a concerned marine scientist. The movie's main gimmick is a rip-off of Piranha 2 and shares the same tagline, "The Spawning." Like the first movie, Apex Predators 2 offers nothing original or unique, featuring low-budget, cheap props, and the same disjointed editing that will turn off viewers looking for any action. A terrible sequel to an awful movie, Apex Predators' only positive is the cool movie poster that will surely lure a few unsuspecting viewers.

Chum! (2024)

Chum! (2024)

After the mass extinction of Great White Sharks, a mad scientist creates a new breed of shark that soon proves to be worse than extinction. Chum is a dollar store shark movie directed by Josh Graves featuring a cast of unknown actors who are likely friends of the director. Despite the great-looking poster, the movie does not take place anywhere near water and features a shark puppet that attacks victims, proving quite menacing despite being smaller than a kitten. The victims are turned into bloodthirsty zombies, but one has to wonder if this was meant to be a Walking Dead riff instead of a Shark Week reject. The special effects include sharp teeth, shark toys, and a couple of hand puppets. Easily one of the worst movies ever made, and with so many low-budget efforts, this one pushes the boundary of entertainment. Rarely do we see a movie with such a perfect title as this effort deserves to be thrown out with the other dollar store rejects.

Shark Girl (2024)

Shark Girl (2024)
A mysterious shark bites a determined young influencer, developing bloodthirsty habits as she attacks those who threaten her chance at fame. Shark Girl is a 2024 horror movie directed by Justin Shilton and Rob Zazzali. In so many ways, this movie seems more like a vampire movie than a shark movie as the main character seeks out victims to satisfy her newfound hunger. While the movie does feature sharks and a conspiracy involving toxic chemicals on the beach, the film loses its direction as the vampire-like main character leaves a series of chopped-up victims and zombie-like revenants.

Mission of the Shark (1991)

Mission of the Shark (1991)
The true story of the USS Indianapolis and the horrific series of events that followed after the ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine, leaving hundreds of men stranded in a shark-infested ocean. Mission of the Shark was a 1991 television movie starring Stacy Keach as Captain Charles McVay. The events of the film are based on the accurate accounts of survivors and focus on the actions taken by Capt. McVay and his court-martial after the war. Directed by Robert Iscove and featuring Richard Thomas, David Caruso, and Bob Gunton in supporting roles. The film portrays the series of events as they played out, involving the delivery of the atomic bomb, followed by the ship's destruction by a Japanese submarine. As a TV movie, the shark attacks are often depicted without excessive gore, and the fear in the men is effectively conveyed as they work together to survive. An excellent account of the actual events, Mission of the Shark is a great movie for fans of World War 2 films, and as a shark movie, it is undoubtedly a great follow-up to Jaws.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged

Teen girls sneak into an archeological dig and scuba dive into a sunken city being explored by the father of two of the ladies. They soon discover that a hidden danger exists when they encounter some cave sharks looking for their next meal. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is a sequel to the 2017 surprise hit 47 Meters Down. While the first movie involved divers trapped in a shark cage, this sequel moves the action to a Mexican town and some sunken ruins. Johannes Roberts returns to the helm of this follow-up movie that features Corinne Foxx, Sophie Nelisse, and Sistine Rose Stallone. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged features a young and talented cast, including the children of Jaime Foxx and Sylvester Stallone. The change in setting helps the movie differentiate itself from the first while still maintaining the common element of a group of divers trapped by sharks. The shark effects are top-notch, with a Great White that looks even scarier than usual. While the plot is pretty routine for a shark survival movie, the film suffers from an ending that is almost too implausible to believe. This sequence of events is the one major drawback from an otherwise decent follow-up movie in this franchise.

Great White (2021)

Great White (2021)
A couple who run a float plane charter fly passengers out to pay respects to a deceased loved one and find themselves in peril when a shark attacks and sinks their float plane. Stranded on a rubber lifeboat, the survivors must find land and survive as the fresh water level drops and a shark looms nearby. Great White is a 2024 shark movie directed by Martin Wilson and starring Katrina Bowden. Great White is a typical shark movie that involves people stranded and facing peril as dangerous sharks threaten them. While the film is set primarily on a lifeboat, the island backdrop does give the movie a sense of authenticity. The shark effects are above average, but the film suffers from some of the more unrealistic portrayals of the shark. Despite this, Great White is a decent popcorn film with a good cast and satisfying conclusion.

Something in the Water (2024)

Something in the Water (2024)

After surviving a violent attack, a young woman recovers and decides to attend the destination wedding of a close friend on a Caribbean island. A pre-wedding girls' day out turns into a fight for survival when a shark attack strands them miles from shore and with no means to call for help. Something in the Water is a 2024 British survival thriller directed by Hayley Easton Street and starring Hiftu Quasem, Natalie Mitson, and Nicole Rietsu Setsuko. With a primarily female cast, Something in the Water begins as a festive girl movie and then evolves into a cautionary tale about a fight for survival. Unlike most other shark movies, Something in the Water focuses more on the women's struggle to stay together and seek help, with the threat of the shark being one of many other challenges. Unlike many other shark survival movies, Something in the Water isn't as bloody as you would expect and focuses more on the threat of isolation and the will to survive. A much better movie than the other shark movies on my watch list, Something in the Water is a slow-burn survival movie that may not appeal to some, but makes for a great thriller.

Into the Deep (2025)

Into the Deep (2025)
Divers looking for sunken treasure encounter pirates after witnessing the murder of drug smugglers. The pirates take control of their boat and force them to dive into shark-infested waters to retrieve drugs, not realizing a great treasure lies below them. Into the Deep is a 2025 thriller directed by Christian Sesma and starring Scout Taylor-Compton, Stuart Townsend, and Richard Dreyfuss. Into the Deep is one of several movies with a plot involving people trapped on a boat with deadly sharks swimming around. This time around, there is a stash of drugs and a hidden treasure that makes the movie more like Peter Benchley's The Deep, but with sharks. The shark effects are impressive for the film, and the underwater scenes feature people swimming in water. While the plot is derivative, the story is engaging, and Ms. Taylor-Compton is excellent in her role. The stunt casting of Richard Dreyfuss does tie the movie more toward Jaws, but at least there are some background reasons explained. A better movie than most of the other films on my marathon, Into the Deep, is one I wouldn't mind watching again or owning.

Great White Waters

Great White Waters
A businessman who is running drugs through his legitimate company hires a team of mercenaries to recover some lost packages, but the team finds their package in shark-infested waters. Great White Waters is a 2025 action movie produced by The Asylum and directed by  Anthony C Ferrante. Great White Waters is better made than most Asylum films and features a solid plot involving the retrieval of sunken drugs. However, the movie falls apart when the shark attacks turn into the absurd, and you end up with some low-key Sharknado-style silliness. The director Ferrante helmed the first Sharknado movie for The Asylum, so it's no wonder this thriller sinks into the abyss of absurdity when it could have easily been a decent thriller. Angela Cole and Ashton Leigh have great roles, but the goofy ending wastes their efforts.

Mountain Shark (2024)

A security team is dispatched to a remote mountain location to neutralize a threat that turns out to be an escaped specimen created by a top-secret laboratory near the mountain. Mountain Shark is a 2024 movie directed by Greg AK  and starring Julia Quayle, Angela Wilding, and Stephen Staley. Mountain Shark is one of many CGI-driven monster movies available to stream on platforms like Tubi and Plex. While the action in the movie does not take place near water, the sheer absurdity of a land shark is what drives this movie, with some of the worst CGI effects contrasting with the fantastic landscape and mountain scenery. While the film features the usual mad scientist and armed security team seen in action sci-fi movies, it has a strong female cast that seems underutilized in this silly movie. With so many crazy shark-out-of-water films being made by studios such as The Asylum, Mountain Shark is pretty late to the game and fresh out of chum.

Tsunami Sharks (2024)

Tsunami Sharks (2024)

A seemingly normal evening turns into a disaster after a freak tsunami floods London and traps many people in their homes while sharks swim in to feast on the victims. Tsunami Sharks is a 2024 disaster movie directed by Ben J Williams and Tyler James. While the plot borrows heavily from the Australian thriller Bait, Tsunami Shark does it on the cheap by using CGI instead of actual water to simulate the flood. The result is laughably bad scenes of people running from surging water despite no debris or wrecked buildings, and sharks that are either too big or too small. Tsunami Sharks has to be one of the most absurd disaster movies in recent years. In contrast, absurd shark movies have become popular with the success of Sharknado; those movies at least make an effort to be entertaining. Tsunami Sharks features poorly done CGI and unengaging actors that you won't care about.

Below (2023)

Below (2023)

A small group of teens looking to enjoy an afternoon swimming at a local reservoir find themselves trapped on a barge as a hungry bull shark stalks them one at a time. Below is a 2023 shark movie directed by Robin Christian and starring Logan Borsari, Audra Schildhouse, and Garrett Forster. Below is a low-budget shark movie featuring a young cast with a simple but effective premise that borrows much of its plot from Jaws 2. The isolated setting, along with the young cast, does make for a decent thriller, but the laughably bad shark prop does distract from what could have been a better movie. Compared to other low-budget shark movies, Below does merit some respect for the cast and crew, who, at last, put some effort into this amateur film.

Bull Shark 3 (2024)

Bull Shark 3

Former Game Warden Timms is yet again called out to search for any rogue Bull Sharks after a teenage couple disappears despite assurances by local authorities that the shark had been killed off. This time, he has the support of the Mayor, the county sheriff, and the local coroner. As with the previous movies, Mr Timms is also dealing with family issues and his sobriety. Bull Shark 3 was filmed alongside Bull Shark 2 and was released in 2024. As with the previous movies, there are numerous scenes set around Lake Ray Hubbard in North Texas, excessive dialogue, and hilariously awful shark props. The shark's CGI is laughingly bad and once again confuses Great White with Bull Sharks. The last two movies could be swapped with one another, and you may never know the difference, as both movies mimic every scene, with just a few characters swapped out. As for the future of this franchise, the viewer gets a hint of a possible follow-up movie that may be released next year.

Shark Evil (2023)

 Shark Evil (2023)
A fishing vessel poaching sharks is attacked by a Great White shark that has long vexed the ship's captain and kills everyone onboard. Soon after, a yacht cruises nearby with five friends celebrating, only to find their party ruined when they are attacked by the massive and hungry shark looking for people to eat. Shark Evil is a 2023 Chinese thriller directed by Huanxiang Chen and starring Xin Zer Tan, Fan Dong, and Xiaoxuan Wei. While the film follows a plot similar to most shark movies, the CGI is better than that of most Asian films, and the entirely Chinese cast does an adequate job of portraying victims stranded in the ocean. As with many foreign releases, Shark Evil can be found titled Man-Eating Shark on some streaming platforms, but it is the same movie with a different poster.

Snow Monster vs Ice Shark (2019)

Snow Monster vs Ice Shark (2019)

A team of scientists in the Arctic discovers a lost world inhabited by giant creatures and a long-forgotten civilization. They are soon cut off from contact with their company and attacked by ancient flying creatures and a deadly ice shark. The survivors find a way to safety as they learn of new threats and the ulterior motives of their benefactors. Snow Monster vs Ice Shark is a 2019 monster movie directed by Huang He, starring Jiantong Zhang, Wenlong Zhao, and Norman Chui. Shark Monster is part of a recent surge of shark movies emerging from China. Most of these movies appear to be competently produced, but they suffer from poor CGI and derivative plots, many of which are based on Jaws and Deep Blue Sea. Strangely, this movie borrows more from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World, focusing more on the giant yeti monster. While the film does feature the tagline' Ice Sharks,' they are secondary to the big ape creature and serve more as a side threat.
